Weekly Recap Fire Police Sherriffs

weekly recap is based on official news flashes from the City of Durango, Durango Police Department (DPD), and La Plata County announcements.

Durango Police Department (DPD)

Schneider Skate Park Shooting

The most significant incident occurred on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. At approximately 1:17 p.m., DPD responded to reports of shots fired at Schneider Skate Park (950 Roosa Ave).

  • The Incident: The shooting followed a verbal altercation between two adult males. The suspect, identified as Chad Alexander Blechinger (42), allegedly shot the victim three times with a handgun.

  • Response Technology: DPD utilized drone technology effectively during the response. A drone was overhead within seconds of the dispatch, providing real-time visual situational awareness before the first officer arrived at 1:20 p.m.
  •
  • Outcome: The suspect surrendered peacefully upon officer arrival. Despite lifesaving efforts by bystanders, officers, and fire personnel, the victim (later identified as a 29-year-old male) passed away at Mercy Hospital. Blechinger has been charged with first-degree murder.

Animal Control Transition

The DPD and the City of Durango confirmed they are moving forward with plans to transition Animal Control services in-house starting in 2026.

  • Focus: The city will assume these duties from the Humane Society to allow for better coordination and responsiveness, particularly regarding leash law enforcement and wildlife interactions (like bear activity) along the Animas River Trail.

  • Resources: Funding will be reallocated to expand the Open Space Ranger Program, which may include adding two new ranger positions.

Durango Fire Protection District (DFPD)

Wildfire Mitigation & Forest-Fuels Reduction

DFPD recently collaborated with the City of Durango to finalize major wildfire mitigation work around the Rockridge Water Tank.

  • Objective: The project focused on reducing forest fuels to protect critical water infrastructure and nearby residential neighborhoods.

  • Funding: The effort was supported by grants from the Colorado State Forest Service and the Colorado Strategic Wildfire Action Program.

Emergency Response

DFPD personnel provided critical medical aid and emergency transport during the Schneider Park incident on May 5, arriving on the scene at 1:27 p.m. to stabilize the victim before transport to Mercy Hospital.

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office (LPCSO)

Fire Ready Exercise and Expo

LPCSO and county emergency management hosted the 6th Annual Fire Ready Exercise and Expo. This event serves as the primary community outreach for wildfire season preparation, focusing on emergency alert sign-ups (CodeRED) and evacuation planning.

Public Safety Alerts

The Sheriff’s Office continues to urge residents to register for the county’s New Emergency Alert Notification System, which was recently updated to improve communication during rapid-onset emergencies like wildfires or floods.
